Fly Me To The Moon is another Great American Songbook tune built on the circle of fifths (also see Autumn Leaves and Sweet Georgia Brown).
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to take Fly Me To The Moon to a jam session and play it comfortably in several keys.
This is also a great way to apply the exercises from my Circle of 5ths Deep Dive course.
How the course works #
We start really slow. I practice along with you and show you how to build the skill of navigating the chords smoothly—especially the voice leading.
For example, with the metronome we begin with:
- root + melody
- root in the LH + 3rd/7th in the RH (shells)
- then we move into left-hand rootless voicings
These skills build on each other step-by-step. Then we take the exact same approach and do it in several other keys.
Styles + guided listening #
We cover two different jazz styles for this tune:
- Swing
- Brazilian jazz
We listen to Frank Sinatra / Count Basie to get that swing feel, then we listen to Astrud Gilberto to understand how Brazilian rhythm and comping work.
